Margaret Bates, Health Practitioner, Youth Service, Hamilton

Margaret Bates is a Health Practitioner for the Youth Service in Hamilton

What attracted me to Richmond was…”Throughout my degree I had a passion for two areas that I wanted to practice in - working in the Mental Health Sector and working with youth.  My role at Richmond offers me the opportunity to work in both areas.”

Compared to my initial expectations, my experience so far in working for Richmond…”Has been a learning curve, the position is a lot more challenging and exciting than what I first envisaged.”

What I like most about working for Richmond…”Is the supportive team environment and daily challenges. One day I am supporting youth cooking and cleaning, and the next day I'm involved in clinical meetings.”

The biggest highlight of my career at Richmond so far…”Would be seeing youth reaching their goals and leaving residence. Another  highlight is when youth reach an understanding that they have many strengths and so much to offer in society.”

What I love about the job…“Are the constant challenges. There are never two days the same. I love the interaction between youth, team and community agencies.  I also have the opportunity to work alongside youth to make a positive contribution to the future of New Zealand.  As Ghandi says - “Be the change you want to see in the world”.

A typical day might involve…”Supporting team members with a client's day-to-day routine, clinical meetings with clients to support them through their journey, responding to youth in crisis and admin duties.”

What I value the most about working for Richmond is"Their values - Integrity, Collaboration and Innovation. In particular, the ability to have an open and honest relationship with my employer and clients while continually seeking out new ways to support clients to optimise their strengths.”

I would describe the learning and development opportunities at Richmond as…“An ongoing journey as I keep up to date with youth and mental health developments. Richmond is very supportive and encourages ongoing training for employees.”
