Applying for a position at Richmond New Zealand

NOTES FOR APPLICANTS

Richmond New Zealand’s Recruitment Policy
Richmond New Zealand (Richmond) uses a competency-based recruitment and selection procedure for all staff appointments.

An important part of selecting the person ‘best suited’ for the position is the assessment of an applicant against the competencies (knowledge, skills and experience) critical to effective performance in the position.  These criteria are set out in the Position Description.

If you are applying for a position
Complete the Application Form and attach your CV if you are providing it separately. If you intend to submit a covering letter and a CV this should be submitted as one document.

What happens next?
Applicants will be contacted and asked to complete a consent form so that we can obtain a criminal history report from the New Zealand Police.

The Recruitment Panel will shortlist applicants whose applications indicate they best meet the criteria listed under the person specification of the Position Description.  In some cases the applicant will be contacted for a preliminary interview which may be by telephone.  The purpose of a preliminary interview is to provide the applicant with further information about the position and work environment and for us to gain more information about your knowledge, experience and education before finalising the shortlist for an assessment interview.

If you are unsuccessful in making the shortlist, you will be advised of this by letter. If you are shortlisted, you will be contacted to attend an interview and, in some cases, other kinds of assessments will be used.

If you are asked to attend an interview, you have the opportunity to be supported at the interview by whanau and/or other support.  If you intend to bring support, please let the Administrator know in plenty of time.  Any expenses involved in bringing support person(s) to an interview are your own responsibility.  Further information on the conduct of a whanau/support person(s) at interview should be discussed with the Administrator.

If you are shortlisted, we may contact the referees listed in your Application Form to verify the information you have supplied during the recruitment process.

What can you expect at the interview?
Richmond interviews are conducted by a Recruitment Panel.  The panel will typically include the manager of the vacant position and one or two people knowledgeable about the skills required for the position. Both genders are represented wherever possible.

Richmond’s style of interviewing is interactive and behaviourally based. Each panel member has an area of questions which will be based on all the key competencies in the Position Description.  Behavioural interviewing focuses on your past behaviour in actual work or other relevant situations.  Your pre-interview preparation should include examples of these.

The panel will take notes throughout the interview.  Behavioural interviews normally take around 45 minutes.  There will be time allocated for you to ask questions and for the panel to convey information about Richmond as a working environment.  Further information about Richmond can also be found on www.richmond.org.nz

How long will the process take?
Normally the process takes two or three weeks from the application closing date. If you are the successful candidate you will be contacted by telephone. If you are unsuccessful you will be contacted by telephone and/or letter.

Note:
If you are successful then you will be verbally advised you are the preferred applicant and you will be provided with a written offer of employment for your consideration.  If an acceptable police check report has been provided, a negotiated and mutually agreeable start date will be established with you.  Should a police check report be unavailable at the time of offer, a start date will be confirmed at a time when this report is made available. Please note, should an adverse report come back, your employment may come to an end. Richmond will determine the standards.

It is Richmond’s policy that staff do not commence work until a satisfactory police check report has been received.
